In case you haven't picked up a copy of the Daily Messenger or visited MPNnow.com over the past week, we've been highlighting the area's top athletes with our player and coach of the year selections. We covered lacrosse, track, softball, baseball, tennis and golf to finish off the 2012-13 school year.

Choosing the winners is a long process that starts during the season when we're getting out to see local teams in action. After sectionals and states are over, our sports staff votes on the winners based on coach nominations, league all-stars, statistics and first-hand observations. I interviewed all the coaches and athletes and photographer Jack Haley drove around to take pictures of the athletes in action. Jack's photos came out amazing and our GateHouse designers made sure everything looked great on the newspaper pages.

I really enjoy doing the series because it allows us to recognize some of the area's best athletes, find out more about their seasons and see what's next for them. The player of the year series will pick back up after the fall season and I believe we'll be able to make it even better.
