If you’re currently getting the basic STAR tax exemption on your home, you’ll need to reapply by Dec. 31 if you want to keep it.
Homeowners who claim the exemption will receive letters from the state telling them about the change and what they must do. Residents should receive their letters soon, as the state Department of Taxation and Finance has started mailing letters to approximately 550,000 homeowners in 17 Western Region counties.
Senior citizens who receive the enhanced STAR exemption do not have to reapply.
The reapplication process is being done to cut down on fraud and abuse — rightfully so — after it was discovered that some homeowners were illegally applying for the exemption on second homes and landlords were taking the credit for their homes and for rental properties and rooming houses.
The registration is expected to save New York taxpayers millions by eliminating inappropriate STAR property tax exemptions. Homeowners have until Dec. 31, 2013 to register — by telephone or online.
