The Department of Transportation has approved federal funding for the city's Inner Loop Reconstruction Project.
The $17.7 million grant will be used to fill in the Inner Loop between East Main Street and Monroe Avenue and build new business, retail and residential space. The grant is the third largest Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant in the nation.
The Inner Loop project will cost $24 million. The city of Rochester will provide the remaining $5.9 million for the project.
This was the city's second attempt at trying to receive federal funds for the project. In 2011, a $15 million grant application was dismissed on a technicality and Senator Schumer said he would work to get the grant approved in the next round of submissions.
