The Macedon Center 31st annual Community Lumberjack Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8 at the firemen’s field on Canandaigua Road in Macedon. Parking is free and handicapped accessible.
1. Saturday’s amateur competition sponsored by Lakeland Equipment/Stihl will begin at 9 a.m. The events include log rolling, two-man crosscut, buck saw, chain saw, log chop, and fire starting. This is a great opportunity to see many of the champions of the 2013 Northeast Colligate Woodsmen Conclave from FLCC compete, organizers said. Local lumberjacks are encouraged to come out and participate too. This is an opportunity for the beginner to become familiar with the timber sport. All the equipment and safety gear will be supplied. Some of the professionals will be on hand to offer advice on how to improve technique or to help you get started in the sport.
2. At 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the crowd favorite greased pole climb will take place, so gather up four people for a team and compete. The pole is covered with Crisco, so be sure to wear clothes that can be thrown away. The first place team takes home $250.
3. On Sunday, see pros from all over the country and Canada compete. Dave Jewitt, Wally and Andrea Robarge, Andy and Erica Schreiner, and Paul Pfenniger are a few of the locals competing. Competition starts at 10:30 a.m. There will be ax throwing, hot saw, two-man crosscut, spring board and more. This event is one of the highest paying competitions in the northeast. Come out to see the pros, get a “cookie” signed and then watch them on ESPN in October.
There is also a craft and collectables sale. Commercial exhibitors include portable band saws, wood carvers, landscaping equipment, fireplaces and more. There will be a petting zoo and fish pond for the kids.
A variety of food is available all day with ice cream for dessert. The lumberjack breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, home fries, juice and coffee is served Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon.
“Come as you are” church services are held at 5 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Also on Sunday, there will be a raffle with donations from Altra Rental for a chainsaw. World champion lumberjack Dave Jewett will also be carving a bear. Blazey’s from Palmyra has donated a string trimmer for the event. Gift cards from Flaherty’s Restaurant, Marble Slab Creamery and Long Acres Farm Market are also available. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the breakfast or at the booth on the grounds.
