  • SODUS ó The wait is almost over! On September 28, the largest pumpkin will be revealed! There has been great secrecy and many rumors, even one that says there is an 800 pound monster pumpkin out there. The Sodus Chamber's 6th Annual Harvest Fest will have all the answers to these tantalizing rumors and much much more. The trophies and the cash prizes (compliments of Lessord Chrysler and Paton's Market Place) will be awarded at 3:00 p.m. If you wish to enter your pumpkin you may bring it Friday night between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. It will be placed on the trailer and then concealed away for the night. If you're bringing it Saturday morning you may drive In from the west only to drop off in front of the old hotel before 8:00 a.m., after that time it will be up to you to transport it since no vehicles will be allowed on Main St. (Any questions call the Chamber at 315-576-3818). We will be "chuckin" large pumpkins all afternoon on the half hours, and, if the winner allows, the largest will be dropped from 75 ft up.
If growing gigantic pumpkins is more than you want to take on, the Chamber will also be judging fruits and veggies that have been decorated or sculptured. Young and old can join in since there are appropriate age groups and ribbons will be awarded to all, even the adults. And if your produce doesn't look exactly like it should, we'll be judging "Freaky Fruits and Veggies" as well. All entries should be at the Chamber booth (corner of Mill and Main) no later than 11:00 a.m.
Other events for Harvest Fest feature wagon rides, demonstrations, arts and craft vendors, Bouncy House for the little ones, farmer's market produce, great food and more. Rain or shine, Main Street in the Village of Sodus is the place to be on September 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you want to come for breakfast, the Methodist Church is serving it starting at 8:00 a.m. but other food vendors include pizza, pulled pork, chicken BBQ, fish fry, and lots of homemade goodies. The Sodus Community Library is a stop off on the free wagon rides and will be having special activities for the whole family as well. Main Street vendors will boast of hand crafted jewelry, or you can choose from Alpaca products, Lavender items, Original photography, and all those other specialty items that can only be found at events like this (knives, dishtowels, crocheted items, blankets etc). Heluva Good Cheese, Avon, Mary Kay and Tastefully Simple will have items and representatives as well. There will be information booths from Reliant Credit Union, First Niagara Bank, Cancer Resource Center, Financial Services, Reed Eye Center and Sodus Lions Club to name a few.
The Chamber is raffling off a handmade wooden salad bowl and tray donated by Phil Rose, of Dragon Rose Woodworking; also the raffle includes a gift certificate from the Great Sodus Bay Association (GSBA) members, a family fun basket donated by A Gentle Breeze Massage Therapy, and a $50.00 gift card from Wegmans. (Tickets are $1.00 or 6 for $5 and available at the Chamber booth).
