  • Local grads receive CSEA scholarships

  • NEWARK ó Brandi and Brynn Lauer, daughters of Jay and Donna Lauer, have been named the recipients of the 2013 Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarships.
    Each year, the union presents the $1,000 Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarship to 18 graduating high school seniors who are the dependents of CSEA members, three in each region.
    Brandi E. Lauer is a 2013 graduate of Newark High School and is now attending Gettysburg College as a biology major. She served as captain of the soccer and basketball teams in Newark and was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and several other clubs, including Link Crew, Environment Club, Varsity Club and Junior and Senior Advisory. Brandi was also a Finger Lakes Fury AAU basketball player. She graduated third in her class with a 97.6 average and acted as Student Council president. She was named a New York State Scholar Athlete, Rochester News channel 10 Scholar Athlete of the Week, All-State 8th team Class B basketball, Section V Class B All-Tournament Team basketball, Finger Lakes First Team All-League soccer, Finger Lakes Second Team All-League basketball and NYSSMA All County Choir. Brandi volunteers as a basketball camp coach through the Alex Eligh Community Center and works at the Newark Showplace 6 movie theater and the Tots Summer Park Program, in addition to being a coach for the Kitz summer youth soccer program. Her future plans are to attend veterinary school.
    Brynn M. Lauer is a 2013 graduate of Newark High School and is now attending the University of Rochester as an engineering major. She was the varsity basketball and soccer teams captain, and Student Council treasurer. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and was active in many clubs, including Link Crew, Environment Club, Varsity Club and Junior and Senior Advisory. A Finger Lakes Fury AAU basketball player, Brynn was named a New York State Scholar Athlete, Rochester News channel 10 Scholar Athlete of the Week, a Fab Five Player of the Year basketball, Finger Lakes East Player of the Year basketball, Finger Lakes First Team All-League basketball and soccer, Second Team All Greater Rochester basketball and soccer and All State 4th Team Class B soccer. Brynn graduated at the top of her class as valedictorian with a 98.6 average. At the U of R, she is playing on the womenís basketball team. She also volunteers as a basketball camp coach through the Alex Eligh Community Center and works at the Newark Showplace 6 movie theater and the Tots Summer Park Program, in addition to being a coach for the Kitz summer youth soccer program.
    Brandiís and Brynnís mother, Donna, is a senior clerk/typist at Wayne County Social Services.
