  • GIRLS SWIMMING PREVIEW: Canandaiagua looks to continue success

  • The Canandaigua girls swimming and diving team continued its dominance in Section 5 Class B last fall, capturing its eighth straight championship.
    The Braves graduated some key contributors, but return the 2012 Daily Messenger Swimmer of the Year Sarah Baxter and sectional champions Serica Hallstead and Alyssa Baker.
    After finishing second in Class B sectionals in 2012, Victor is moving up to Class A.
    Palmyra-Macedon is coming off winning its first Finger Lakes League title and Finger Lakes League Invitational championship in the program's 20-year history. The Red Raiders took third at the Section 5 Class C championship.
    Here's a look at the area's girls swimming and diving teams:
    Canandaigua Braves
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class B, Monroe County East
    COACH/YEAR: Bob Black, 18th Year
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: 7-1, Section 5 Class B champions
    TOP SWIMMERS: Sarah Baxter, Sr.; Serica Hallstead, So.; Alyssa Baker, Sr.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Baxter holds school records in the 100 and 200 free and was a High School All-American in the 100 free. Hallstead won a Section 5 title in diving and finished 11th at the state meet. Baker won the back stroke sectional title and swam on the 200 free relay that won sectionals.
    OTHER SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Kylie Loforte, Sr.; Abbie Sullivan, Sr.; Erika Holland, Sr.; Heather Chrisman, Jr.; Sarah Jane Wied, Jr.
    Gananda Blue Panthers
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class C, Finger Lakes
    COACH/YEAR: Mark Sixbey
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: 3-11, Eighth at sectionals
    TOP SWIMMERS: Rachel Bush, Sr.; Alex Cunningham, Sr.; Zoe Paris, Sr.; Paige Nelson, Jr.; Bethany Riethmeier, Jr.; Jessica Stookey, Sr.; Lauren Johnson, Fr.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Cunningham made the All-Finger Lakes League team in the 100 breast stroke and finished third at sectionals.
    COACH'S COMMENTS: These girls are a very tight-knit team and are very motivated for this season. We have grown to 19 athletes, so we won't be killed by sheer numbers any longer. They have a lot of talent and drive.
    OTHERS SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Allyssa Staryszak, Jr.; Marta Szumski, Sr.; Stella VanNess, So.
    Marcus Whitman Wildcats
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class C, Finger Lakes
    COACH/YEAR: Marcy Adams
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: Finished third in league standings, fourth at sectionals
    TOP SWIMMERS: Amelia Stash, Jr.; Courtney Copper, So.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Stash finished second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free at the league invitational, and fourth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free at sectionals. Copper finished third in the IM and fourth in the breast stroke at the league invitational, and fourth in the IM and fifth in the breast stroke at sectionals.
    COACH'S COMMENTS: Both are very dedicated to the sport. They swim year round with local community clubs. They had great off-season swims with the club teams and are ready to do the same in varsity.

    TOP SWIMMERS: Grace Gallentine, Sr.; Sabrina Brooks, Sr.; Emma Loree-Findeis, Sr.; Bri Lantrip, So.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Gallentine, Brooks and Lantrip all qualified for sectionals in 2012.
    COACH'S COMMENTS: All of these girls work hard every day at practice and are great leaders.
    OTHER SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Bailey Mahoney.
    Newark Reds
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class C, Finger Lakes
    COACH/YEAR: Tedd Van Duyne
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: 4-4, 10th at sectionals
    CAPTAINS: Megan Kreuser, Sr., Sarah Sharp, Sr., Morgan Johnson, Sr
    Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class C, Finger Lakes
    COACH/YEAR: Christopher Oaks and Becky DeSol
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: 8-2 (6-2 in league), Third at sectionals
    TOP SWIMMERS: Ellie Jones, Sr.; Alex Waasdorp, Sr.; Dana Wilsey, Fr.; Savannah Kasperski, Sr.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Jones took first in the 200 IM and 500 free at the league invite. Waasdorp took sixth in the backstroke at the league invite. Wilsey took first team all-league honors in the 200 free. Kasperski was an all-league honorable mention in the 200 free.
    COACH'S COMMENTS: Jones and Waasdorp have trained year-round to end their senior year competitively, while Wilsey and Kasperski continue to remain strong competitors in the Finger Lakes League.
    OTHER SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Audrey Quinn, 8th; Alanna Viscosi, 8th.
    Victor Blue Devils
    CLASS/LEAGUE: Class A, Monroe County East
    COACH/YEAR: Christine Phelps
    2012 RECORD/PLAYOFFS: 4-2, Second at sectionals
    TOP SWIMMERS: Jessie Halladay, Sr.; Natalie Zaravella, So.
    ACHIEVEMENTS: Halladay is a two-time state qualifier. Zaravella won a Section 5 title in the 200 individual medley and qualified for states.
    COACH'S COMMENTS: They have worked hard over the past year and are ready to compete.
    OTHER SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Maddy Chapin, Fr.; Erin Norton, Fr.
