  • State police investigating fatal crash in Wayne County

  • New York state police are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Knickerbocker and Kenyon roads in Ontario, Wayne County.
    Troopers said a vehicle operated by Lindsay B. Schafer, 30, of Ontario, was traveling north on Knickerbocker Road, and a vehicle operated by Murray E. Thompson, 81, of Ontario, was traveling west on Kenyon Road. Thompson's vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by Schafer's vehicle, troopers said.
    Thompson was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight, where he was later pronounced dead, troopers said. Schafer and three children who were passengers in her vehicle were transported to Strong by ambulance for minor injuries, where they were treated and released.
    Troopers said the cause of the crash is pending further investigation.
    State police were assisted at the scene by the Ontario Fire Department, the Ontario Rescue Squad and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
