Thomas W. McDermott, 72, of Silver Hill Road, died on Sept. 28, 2013, at Clifton Springs Hospital.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Schulz-Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Court Newark. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hope Avenue, Newark. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society.
Tom was born in Queens on Dec. 27, 1940, the son of Lester and Edna Dougherty McDermott. He retired from Verizon in 1994. He had been an instructor for NY Telephone Co. School on Grace Avenue. He was a Navy veteran, where he served for 30 years active; he was also in the reserves when he was in radio printer school. He was a member of the American Legion of Newark, Newark Elks Lodge and Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he was active in the church.
Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carole Radl McDermott; three sons, Daniel (Autumn) of California, Michael (Wendy) of Newark and Timothy of St. Louis; two daughters, Julie (Daniel) Golden of Newark and Christine (Jeffrey) Ermer of East Amherst; 10 grandchildren; brother, Dennis of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Shirley Turney and Elaine Orosz; and nieces and nephews.
