New York State of Health announced that more than 40,000 New Yorkers have signed up for insurance on the exchanges.
The number reflects those whose who have completed the full application process and were found eligible for the low-cost plans they chose.
The exchange launched on Oct. 1 marks the beginning of a six-month enrollment period for the plans that take effect Jan. 1, 2013.
A release from the exchange headquarters for New Yorkers also said the state's customer service center operators have responded to more than 26,000 callers. NY State of Health technicians have monitored the site 24/7 and have made "numerous improvements to nystateofhealth.ny.gov since the Oct. 1, and they continue to make daily improvements to ensure New Yorkers can easily shop and apply online," the release said.
According to the announcement, the rates for the health plans on the exchange represent a 53 percent reduction compared to the previous year's individual rates. In addition, it is estimated that nearly three-quarters of individual enrollees will qualify for financial assistance. Close to 500 in-person Assistors/Navigators have been trained and are providing high-quality enrollment assistance in all 62 counties of the state, and in a total of 48 languages. For in-person assistance, community navigators can be found by county on the website.
