  • LETTER: Be prepared for fracking's consequences

    • email print
  • If and when fracking is approved in New York state, be prepared:
    — For the influx of many miners — not necessarily Americans;
    — For traffic tie-ups, because of at least 100 incoming tanker trucks of clean water for each well and an equal fleet to haul away waste brine;
    — For much noise in both truck traffic and the drilling process that can run 24 hours per day;
    — For the miners parking their big vehicles wherever there is space.
    Be prepared:
    — By checking your property insurance, as a number of insurance companies are not insuring mining due to its safety record;
    — By learning as much as you can about what others have experienced from the fracking process;
    — By trying to picture what thousands of wells can do to your area;
    — By checking your zoning and other local laws NOW, especially safety and crime prevention, to protect those assets that money can’t buy and make your area a place you’re proud to call home.
    There are even more concerns, but don’t wait till it’s too late when “grandfathering” legal actions can override new laws.
