  • The Pittsford Sutherland varsity field hockey team faced off against crosstown rival Pittsford Mendon last Friday. The grass at the Sutherland stadium was freshly mowed but field hockey played on grass is a totally different game than that on turf and the play was slow with a lot of turnovers by both schools.
Both teams fought hard and hard good scoring opportunities but the game was scoreless at the half. Sutherland came out strong in the second half and had three great corner attempts but was unable to score.
Mendon fought back and was able to get a cross shot past Emmalie Drake as the ball deflected off a Knight player's leg. Unfortunately for Sutherland, they had a goal called back due to an early whistle and the Vikings won the second meeting between these two teams 1-0.
On Saturday, the Knights traveled to Eastridge where they outplayed the Lancers. Just eight minutes into the game, Sutherland got on the board off a corner shot that Maggie Cottrell was able to score off of a pass from Claire Dickerson.
At 8:16 left in the half, Carley Moynihan scored the second goal for the Knights when the Eastridge goalie got caught out of position. Adele Fairbrother scored a third goal as the half ended with Sutherland having a 3-0 lead.
The second half of the game gave the entire bench the opportunity to see action of the field and Aubrie Bleier and Allison Robinson each scored giving the Knights a 5-0 victory. Kudos to the Lancers that fought hard until the end with a roster that provides for no substitutes.
The Knights face East Rochester and Irondequoit during Homecoming week.
