  • PALMYRA — Garlock Sealing Technology employees will don brightly colored T-shirts and take to the streets Tuesday, Oct. 15 as they “Build a Rainbow of Hope.”
Nancy Schrader, chair of Garlock’s Wellness Team, and Megan DeTaeye, chair of the company’s contributions committee, have been working together to plan the walk as part of Garlock’s Cancer Awareness Week next week, Oct. 14 through 18.
In years past, Schrader said they have held a Cancer Awareness Walk, usually taking part in the Waterloo Breast Cancer Walk. This year, however, the walk was moved to Rochester — too far for Garlock employees to travel, so Schrader and DeTaeye and their team and committee members decided to hold a walk locally.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the walk is meant to raise awareness of all types of cancer. The theme is “Build a Rainbow of Hope.” Garlock allowed employees who signed up to take part in the walk to choose what color T-shirt they wanted to wear representing awareness of a type of cancer that has touched their lives.
“I think we all know someone affected by cancer or have lost someone to cancer,” Schrader said.
Employees dressed in pink, purple, green, yellow, blue, orange and more will walk, leaving the Garlock plant on Division Street, head to the four churches, walk down Main Street to Breen’s and then down Route 21 to the east entrance of the plant. Schrader said it’s a little over 2 miles. Some 60 employees volunteered to walk in the event, which will kick off at 7 a.m. Teams will walk throughout the day every half hour until 5 p.m. Tuesday evening.
The walk and other fundraising events at Garlock are part of mother company EnPro Industries’ EnPink Campaign held annually during the month of October. The week of events locally includes a bake sale, pin sales, a giving day, where employees who donate to the cause can to wear jeans to work, among other fundraisers at the Palmyra business. All proceeds from the week will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
