This year, The Greece Athena Girls Soccer program and Football program, each representing some of Athena's finest athletes, put aside their respective sports gear and joined forces to help fight breast cancer in a different way.
Together each squad went out and asked family, friends and neighbors to donate their gently used bras to a national organization called Bras for a Cause. The organization's purpose is to take these donations and recycle them to help woman recovering from breast reconstruction or women that might otherwise never be able to afford them, living in battered woman's shelters.
Bras for a Cause was originally run by Lisa Iafrati at The College at Brockport. The program was so successful that Athena decided to take it on as their way of giving back to the community.
The team made donation boxes and to date have collected well over 300 bras so far. The campaign will run through the end of October, helping to promote breast cancer awareness month. Each home game, practice, and every opportunity they have, the girls and boys collect bras (new and gently used) for this very important cause.
