  • Gilberto M. Gonzalez, 79, died on Oct. 28 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
No prior calling. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Nov. 1 at St. Michael Church, S. Main St., Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.
Mr. Gonzalez was born on July 14, 1934 in Anasco, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Ramon and Elena Mendez Gonzalez. He came to Newark in 1955 to worked for Jackson Perkins, he then worked for Hallagan Manufacturing of Newark and Gleason Works in Rochester. For eighteen years, Gilberto worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Rochester, retiring in 2001. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church. From his modest beginnings, Gilberto truly cherished few things in life. His family was most important to him and was his strongest value, including his two daughter-in-laws and son-in-law, whom he treated as his own.
In past years, Gilberto enjoyed bowling and most of all playing dominoes with his brothers and close friends. He loved all his grandchildren, having been a father figure to two of his grandsons and was the best man at his eldest grandson's wedding. Gilberto's wonderful sense of humor and hearty laugh will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by children, Gilbert (Ivette) of Newark, William (Esperanza) of Imperial, Calif., Myriam Gonzalez Oberdorf of Newark and Aida (William) Rogers of Davenport; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Josefa and Mercedes; four brothers, Ramon, Alfonso, Crispin and Jose all of Puerto Rico; and several nieces and nephews. Gilberto was predeceased by his wife Georgina “GiGi” in 2011 and two brothers.
