It’s finally done – and well worth the wait. The entrance to the Creative Workshop is now completed and the makeover includes: seating and public space, bike racks, a fully accessible entrance to the Workshop and new art titled Filly created by artist Mary Taylor of Mendon, NY. The sculpture looks so curious and ready to jump from her stand to explore the MAG grounds!

Many have inquired about the materials used and her construction so we thought we would share some creation shots.

The artist begins by creating a form of welded steel rods much like she did for this ‘otter’ armature shown here:

Construction: armature

The open spaces between the steel rods are filled with more steel rods welded into place:

The surface or coat of the sculpture is produced by welding additional Stainless steel rods to the form:

Construction: coat for 'Filly'

Detail: coat for Filly

The sculpture is then painted by the artist and in this case, an automotive clear coat is added because the sculpture has been installed outside.

We hope that you get the chance to come by and see this latest addition to Centennial Sculpture Park.  Come to the Creative Workshop Open House on Saturday, December 14th from 11 – 4 pm, learn about our winter classes and Art Day School in February. It would be a great time to meet Filly, too.
