New York Farm Bureau members have donated nearly 8.4 million pounds of food through a partnership with Feeding America NYS Food Banks. In addition, state Farm Bureau donated nearly $1,000 in cash from nine county Farm Bureaus within the Food Bank of Central New York's 11 county area, the Farm Bureau announced.
The announcement Tuesday coincided with the start of Farm Bureau's 2013 state annual meeting in Syracuse. Members and agricultural partners give as part of a yearlong effort to feed the hungry statewide.
The food is collected through the "Harvest for All" donation program, a nationwide annual farm donation partnership linking the Farm Bureau and Feeding America in each state. With a few weeks left in 2013, it is expected the donations will climb even higher.
Since the Harvest for All program began 10 years ago, New York farmers routinely rank at the top of the list among states for their generosity.
"This year as many New Yorkers continue to struggle through a challenging economy compounded with the recent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit cuts, the demands on food banks to meet the need for food assistance are great," stated Sharon M. Smith, executive director of Food Bank Association of New York.
