NEWARK Newark Elks Lodge No. 1249 welcomed families and friends of those members who passed away throughout 2013 to a special service to honor their memory.
There were over 50 people in attendance to remember Charles Meyers, Carl Conklin, Edward Brickle, Thomas Viola, Jack Lunay, Ronald VanCamp, Thomas McDermott, Cylvester Freeman, Joseph Gullo, Allen Graudons and Frank Palermo.
James Sadler, Exalted Ruler, opened the ceremony with an invocation by Diana Tormey, Chaplain. The First United Methodist Church Choir, under the direction of Kathy Cornwell, sang three selections including 'Lead Me Lord', 'Advent Credo' and 'Advent Prayer'.
The guest speaker, Reverend Timothy Johnson, pointed out that each of the departed had not only a shared commonality with all around him, but also a certain uniqueness that had been shared with his family, community and everyone he touched. That uniqueness would live on forever.
A long stemmed red rose was placed on the altar for each of the departed by Lodge Secretary, Dick Bowker, and Inner Guard, Sue House. Forget-me-nots, amaranth and clinging ivy were also placed on the altar to represent justice, immortality and brotherly love.
The bell rang out seven times to remind all those present that, "Upon the tablets of love and memory, their names shall endure forever."
The ceremony ended with the Choir leading the assembly in 'Auld Lang Syne'. Immediately following, the guests were invited to attend a dinner prepared by Club Steward, Matt DeJohn, and lodge members.
