  • Two people were airlifted by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital Wednesday morning following a four-vehicle crash on state Route 96 in Phelps, Ontario County sheriff's deputies said.
Deputies said Samuel Hany, 22, of Switzerland, was traveling east on Route 96, just west of state Route 14, at approximately 6:30 a.m. when he allegedly swerved to miss a deer. Hany's vehicle entered the westbound lane and struck head-on a vehicle operated by Robert Velte, 63, of East Wright Avenue, Waterloo. Hany's vehicle overturned and was struck by an eastbound vehicle operated by Wayne R. Bishop, 59, of County Road 13, Clifton Springs. Deputies said the impact caused Hany's vehicle to go back into the westbound lane, where it struck a westbound vehicle operated by Katie Anastasio, 21, of state Route 414, Seneca Falls.
Deputies said Hany and Velte were taken to the hospital for injuries, which included broken legs and arms and head injuries. Bishop and Anastasio were not injured.
Hany will be ticketed with failure to keep right and will be scheduled to appear in Phelps Town Court, deputies said.
The Oaks Corners, Phelps and city of Geneva fire departments, as well as Phelps and Finger Lakes ambulance crews and two Mercy Flight helicopters, assisted at the scene.
State Route 96 was closed from County Road 6 to Hayes Road for three and a half hours during the crash investigation, deputies said.
