  • COACH OF THE YEAR
    Julie Backus
    Midlakes
    Years coaching: 9
Season Highlights: Led the Screaming Eagles to a 15-5 regular-season record to finish third in the Finger Lakes East. The girls' wins this season during dual meets were very exciting. They were close and they all helped each other out.
What makes this team memorable: The girls were confident enough to train and push each other. Mariah Sargent, Haley Smith, Jessica Skellie, Colby Kidder, Kayla Goodman and Abbigail Jansen worked hard and wanted to be successful. For us, it's only the second year we've been complete all season and we were competitive.
Favorite part about coaching: Seeing them grow up and continue to love running either competitively or just for the love of it. Having my fourth graders excited to run cross country because their teacher is "couch of the year."
    RUNNERS
    Audrey Button
    Marcus Whitman

Season highlights: Won the Early Season Scramble at Bullis Park, small school race at the GCC Invite, and League Championship at Bullis Park. Placed second at the McQuaid Invitational in the unseeded A-2 small school race. Finished 13th overall in Section 5 at sectionals, and third in Class C. Went undefeated in league meets (6-0) and made a second-consecutive trip to states.
Most memorable moments: Being called "Ashley Burton" at the Section 5 banquet. Bus rides to and from meets with my team. Stopping at Wegmans to eat after meets.
Plans for college: Possibly studying physical therapy and continue running cross country and track.

Page 2 of 2 - Most memorable moments: Finished 22nd at McQuaid and finishing in first for the first time at Sodus.
    Mariah Sargent
    Midlakes
    Senior
Season highlights: The captain made the Wayne-Finger Lakes East all-star team. Placed 14th at Section 5 Class C race.
Most memorable moments: All of our team bonding, whether it was our crazy sleepovers or just hanging out in our secret sports before practice. I loved that we were able to grow not only as a team, but as a XC family. I am going to miss all of them so much and wish them all the best next season.
