NEWARK — Perkins School’s PTA-sponsored “Math Night” May 28 added up to students and their families participating in several fun, number-related activities designed to reinforce what they are learning in the classroom.
Held in the gymnasium, the theme was “Math Around New York State.”
Students “visited” Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, New York City and Albany and in each city center there was a different math-related activity.
Once completed, they had their NYS map-shaped “passport” punched and when all five were completed, each student had their photo taken and was given a goodie bag with some supplies like math fact flash cards, pencils, and more so they could do math activities at home.
The evening’s events were funded by Title I money given to PTA’s to spend on academic things involving parents.
“This year the PTA wanted it to be focused on math because of our newly implemented math modules,” Perkins Principal Sue Achille said.
Before the math-related activities began May 28th, students and their families were also treated to pizza and other refreshments in the cafeteria.
