Wednesday Dec. 19 appeared to be just another night in Section V basketball, there wasn’t really any marquee matchups on the schedule.

However something peculiar happened, and possibly historic took place.

It all started in Bergen, for a Genesee Region League contest between Byron-Bergen and Pembroke, where Austin Richardson connected on  7 3-pointers en route to 34 points leading B-B to a 57-43 victory.

Staying in the GR, Batavia Notre-Dame hosted league rival Wheatland-Chili in a battle of the unbeatens. Notre-Dame Senior Jared Thornton finished with a game-high 30 points and connected on 7 3-pointers to power Notre-Dame past Wheatland-Chili 73-58 in Genesee Region play.

Over in Victor, the Blue Devils hosted the Penfield Patriots in Monroe County action, Penfield senior Guard Andre Lee scored a career-high 25 points, including a remarkable 7-for-7 from 3-point range, Penfield won in convincing fashion, 69-27.

In Brockport The Blue Devils hosted the Greece-Athena Trojans, Athena Sophomore Jay Sarkis finished with a game-high 28 points on 7 3-pointers, four of which came in the fourth quarter. Athena cruised to a  89-49 victory.

I’ve been following Section V basketball for over 20 years now and I can never remember a night where multiple players hit as many as 7 3-pointers on the same night.

In most schools and areas that’s school record material. I know at my alma mater, Avoca, the record for most 3 points field goals in a game is 7, it was set by Mike Button in the 1992-1993 season.

In the NYSPHSAA Tournament held in Glens Falls, the record for most 3-point field goals in a game in classes A and D is 7, in Class D the record is held by Michael Hoyt of S.S Seward and was set in 2003.

In Class A there is a tie, Lamont Hough hit 7 for Hempstead in 1989 and Kyle Reuter matched it with 7 of his own for  Mexico in 2005. The only one who has topped them was Charlie Wightman who hit 8 for Norwich in 1993 in Class B. I was fortunate enough to be in attendance for both Hoyt’s and Reuter’s magically games. II can tell you there’s nothing more exciting than when a player is that hot and it happens to be the state semi-finals or championship game.

The New York state record is an incredible 13, set by Joe Licata in 2010. I think that record will last a long time. Either way 7 is big number, and for four players in the same general area to all hit Lucky Number 7 on the same night is nothing short of a Christmas miracle!
