In the news: Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It happened on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, and led to the U.S. declaring war on Japan and joining World War II. More than 2,000 Americans died in the attack, and 1,000 were injured.

Happening today: There’s only one movie opening in wide release this week (what is it with Hollywood these days?). That film is “Playing for Keeps,” a PG-13 romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Dennis Quaid and Noah Lomax. Some of the many limited-release films opening this week look intriguing (“Hyde Park on Hudson,” R, starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney; “Lay the Favorite,” R, starring Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Vince Vaughn and Catherine Zeta-Jones), so check your newspaper for listings.

Opening bell: The Dow Jones opened at 13,074.04; it finished up 39.55 points Thursday.

Motivational quote: “Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized. In the first, it is ridiculed. In the second, it is opposed. In the third, it is regarded as self evident.” - Arthur Schopenhauer

Watercooler talk: High school player makes full-court shot

Monticello High School basketball player Lucas Marty makes a full-court shot, beating the buzzer at a game in Wisconsin against Highland High School.
