Quote of note

"As you know, the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome. It seems to me that my brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am. I would like to thank you for your embrace, also to ... the bishops, thank you very much. First and foremost, I would like to pray for our emeritus pope, Benedict XVI. Let us pray all of us together … so that he's blessed by the lord and guarded." - Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, in his first address as pope, according to CNN. As an Argentinian, he is the first non-European pope.

News to know

Police are searching two towns in upstate New York for a man they believe opened fire in a barbershop and at a car wash after blowing up his house, The Associated Press reports. Authorities found guns and ammunition in suspect Kurt Meyers' apartment after responding to a fire call at the building in Mohawk. At least four people have been killed and two others were wounded after the shooting in the nearby city of Herkimer.
