The 28th annual Macedon Center Community Lumberjack Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12 at the Macedon Center Firemen’s Field on Canandaigua Road. Admission is only $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens, $1 for kids age 6 to 14, and 5 and under are free.

This year there will be activities for the kids to do. Lowes will be there on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to build birdhouses with the kids. There will also be a rock climbing wall both days. These activities are both free with admission.

Gates open both days at 8 a.m. Amateur competition will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. The events will include log rolling, two-man crosscut, buck saw, chain saw, log chop, and tree felling. This is a great opportunity for the beginner to become familiar with the timber sport. All equipment and safety gear is supplied. Some of the professionals will be on hand to offer advice on how to improve technique. At 5 p.m., the grease pole climb will take place, so gather up four people and get a team together. The pole is covered with Crisco so old clothes are recommended.

On Sunday, professional competition will begin at 10:30 a.m. All the competitors will use their own equipment. Men’s and women’s events will be the underhand chop, stock saw, single buck, and two-man crosscut. Open events will include springboard, hot saw, and axe throw. Demonstrations will be conducted throughout the day. The grease pole finals will be held at 5 p.m., after which will be a gift card raffle donated by local merchants and a wood carving by world champion lumberjack Dave Jewitt. Jewitt will be carving on Saturday and competing on Sunday so visitors can place an order or purchase a carving already made.

There will be a craft and collectable sale. To be a vendor, call 986.8140. Commercial exhibitors will include portable band saws, log carvers, landscaping equipment, fireplaces, and more. A variety of food is available all day, pie and ice cream for dessert. The lumberjack breakfast is served both days in the fire hall Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m., Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon. The “come as you are” church services are held Saturday at 5 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
