Students at Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School welcomed 45 veterans Friday to pay tribute to their service to the country.
Principal Chip Dolce reminded students that Monday, Nov. 12 wasn’t just another day off, but was a day to honor the military men and women who have served past and present. Veterans, from most every branch of the military including Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, entered the gymnasium as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” played.
The day’s events included breakfast for the veterans, the presentation of the flags by the Palmyra American Legion Color Guard, the recitation of a poem by the students in Mark Fundis’ fifth grade class and the entire school performing a song of thanks from the students who lined the walls of the entire gym.
“Thank you, oh thank you, men and women brave and strong, to those who served so gallantly, we sing this grateful song,” students sang at the ceremony’s conclusion.
Past Commander of the Palmyra American Legion Post No. 120 Ray Jenkins presented the school with a Blue Star poster to recognize all the students’ family members currently serving in the military. Jenkins also presented faculty member Bonnie Santmeyer with a Blue Star banner. Santmeyer’s son is currently serving in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan. The white in the banner represents the innocence of the person going into war not knowing what they will face, the red signifies the blood shed in battle and the blue represents the valor, sacrifice and courage each serviceman and woman gives.
