The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches or warnings for much of upstate New York, with more than a foot of snow expected in some eastern areas by the weekend.

The winter storm will also bring significant snow to Rochester and the Finger Lakes region.

In Wayne County, a winter storm warning is in effect from late through Saturday morning, with heavy snow and sleet expected. Heavy snow has begun along Route 31 in Macedon, Palmyra and Newark, and it’s the slick kind that makes for tricky driving. HIghway crews are out salting the wet snow, which is piling up fast.

Occasional snow will become steadier and heavy by Friday afternoon in the Rochester region, with temperatures dipping into the low 20s and accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow by Friday morning. Snow and wind are likely Friday, with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and higher amounts near Lake Ontario and east of Rochester.

Accumulations by daybreak Saturday will be around 4 to 8 inches near and south of the Thruway.  Blowing and drifting snow will be expected at night with difficult travel.

Forecasters say the heavy snowfall will be produced by the merging of a strong storm coming out of the west meeting a weaker but moisture-laden system approaching from the south.
