Marion’s Mackenzie Sturtz brought home a fourth-place finish in the high jump at the New York State championships last weekend. The junior tied for fourth clearing a height of 5 feet, 5 inches. The winner jumped one inch higher.

“She had a great season she was probably one jump away from being in contention for the state title,” Black Knights coach Bob Goodell said. “It was a real close miss at 5-6. Had she made that it would’ve forced the girl who made it to jump 5-7.”

Marion teammate Brandon VanderBrook placed seventh overall in the 55-meter dash with a finals time of 6.55.

“He ran well, but he wasn’t happy with his performance,” Goodell said. “The times weren’t what he ran at state qualifiers. He’s very focused and I think the performance will motivate him.”

Both Marion athletes are attending the New Balance Nationals in New York City this weekend. VanderBrook will do the 60-meter dash.

Newark’s Jeremy Hassett finished 10th overall in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:34.48.
