The Newark Volunteer Fire Department held its annual banquet on Jan. 26 at Club 86 in Geneva where several members were honored for their achievements.
Receiving the 50-year members recognition was George Peyton of the Excelsior Hook and Ladder Co. No. 4 and Jim Sadler of the Arcadia Hose Co. No. 2. Recognized for 25 years of service included Richard Morrison, Michael Colacino, James R. Colacino and Stephen Prinzi. Other members were honored for their hours of training and the Order of the Red Hearts, which makes light of the volunteers’ follies throughout the year.
Also recognized were several firefighters for their part in saving the life of a 27-year-old Grace Avenue man who was trapped under a car in his driveway after the car jack unexpectedly collapsed. Crews worked to free the man and he was airlifted to an area hospital to be treated. Those recognized included Captain Kevin Velte, Lt. Dog Velte, Lt. Dan Henson, Dillan Frank, Gerardo Vazquez, Scott Stell, Juan Ortiz, Past Chief Paul Chetney, Joe Bartucca, Bernie Henson, Fire Police Lynn Johncox and Fire Police Ron Elliot. Also on scene that day were Newark Police Officer Rob Dwello and Newark Police Captain Mark Thoms.
