Wayne County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars are sporting a new design.
Sheriff Barry Virts said the red and white colors, which were selected in 1960 by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association as the colors of choice, are more bold and easily seen by motorists. In 2008, recently retired Sheriff Dick Pisciotti tried a new color scheme of black and gold on all the vehicles for a more stealth look — it was the first time ever the county steered away from the traditional.
Seeking to return to tradition, Virts studied some 25 designs hung on his office wall before selecting the new decal — a modified version of the black and gold and previous designs, but $100 cheaper per car.
Virts said that every year, as the department replaces old cars, some eight to 10 patrol vehicles will be phased in with the new decal.
