January 16, 1913

• There was great excitement in East Newark when a paroled patient from Willard went in to an insane frenzy, attempting to burn down his house, and shooting a several police officers.

• Wanted - A young person to stem tobacco - Apply Room 5, First National Bank.

• Ad - Snow Storm Sale - Boynton, The Shoe Man.

• Chappel and Dator opened their horse business at 57 West Union St., offering matched teams, heavy work horses, and mares.

• New York State Canal officials refused to allow sewerage from the new school in East Newark to empty into the canal.

75 Years Ago
January 19, 1938

• The Newark Village Board voted unanimously to submit to voters a proposition exempting every volunteer fireman from $500 of assessed value in their property taxes.

• Mrs. Ruth Kaupp and Mrs. Amelia Burns became the new owners of The Paris Shop, exclusive women's store. The seller was W.L. Mussack.

• Ad - Loblaws - Magic Cup Coffee 3 lbs. for 39 cents, Navel oranges 35 cents a dozen, and Bab-O Cleanser 2 cans for 21 cents.

• Ad - Shuffle off to Buffalo on the Greyhound Cruiser - $2.90 Round Trip - Tickets at Wildhack's Corner Drug Store.

• Ad - Miss Louise Alexander was the new owner of Smart Set Salon in the Gardenier Hotel - Permanents $3.50.

• Members of the Newark PBA appeared at a Newark Village Board meeting asking for a $200 cost of living increase.

• A winter theme was chosen for the 4th annual hospital ball to be held at the Newark Elks Club.

• Joseph E. Stewart, 68, who was with Hallagan Manufacturing Co. for 50 years, 25 years as Supt., died suddenly at his cottage in Sodus Point.

• Ad - Playing at Turkey Town in Macedon, the Larry Buri Quartette.

• At Newark High School, officers of the Tri Hi Y Club were Marilyn Muth, Sue Morris, Jane Marsh, Diane Lynch and Sally Scofield.

• The Newark Village Board took no action on a renewed city issue. A previous request to make Newark a city was vetoed by the Governor.

• Sidewalk Talk - Will the new Chase Pitkin force other businesses to close?

• WNHS television station at Newark High School signed on, organized by Senior Becky Hartman.

• Lake Country Kitchens, located in the Street of Shops was offering customers a chance to win a $15,000 dream kitchen.

• Now Open - Kaleen Ltd. - Oriental Rugs in the Pro-May Mall.
