February 27, 1913

• In Wellsville, N.Y., a well was struck producing 500 barrels of oil a day.

• F.A. Fisk sold his East Union St. garage to John Shattner.

• Ross Lee purchased land on West Union St. to construct a laundry building.

• The Newark Pickle Company was temporarily located in the old Browniekar plant on Seigrist Street.

• The Haywood Wagon Co. on Murray St., maker of contractors wagons, was forced to declare bankruptcy.

March 16, 1938

• Three new teachers were hired for the upcoming school year. Miss Florence Cady, Bernard Heise, and Miss Rachel Reeves would teach at Lincoln School, and Professor Fran Stein would teach at Perkins.

• The welfare clothing room was empty. A plea was made for contributions to help the needy.

• Newark auto dealers sold 64 used cars as a result of a special campaign during National Used Car Week.

• A plan to exempt Newark volunteer firemen from the first $500 of assessed valuation passed by a 14 vote margin.

• Infectious hepatitis hit five children and one adult in the village, as well as 71 patients and employees at the Newark State School.

• Mike Muscolino of Boy Scout Troop 120 was awarded a trophy for being the best bowler.

• One of Newark's oldest residents, Sherman E. Lake, of East Miller St., died at the age of 97. He had smoked a pipe since age 12.

• Louis F. Haney, Attorney at Law, announced the opening of his practice at 120 Madison St.

• Playing at the Capitol Theater was "West Side Story," winner of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

• The Newark Village Board took first steps in selling the Municipal Building with the goal of putting it back on the tax rolls.

• Former Newark resident Don Vanderbrook, son of Mrs. Hazel Vanderbrook of Marbletown was featured in a story. He is a successful floral designer who has done work for Whire House gatherings.

• Leon Hall, former Newark Village Trustee and funeral director, died at the age of 70.
