March 1, will it come in like a lamb and go out like a lion or will it come in like a lion and go out like a lamb? It is snowing this morning and looks quite harmless on this March 1, but I think we should hold our predictions until the end of the day. Enough of the weather, let’s get down to history.

Current history this day in 2013 is amazing. The Pope retired which hasn’t happened in over 600 years. He flew away in a helicopter to his summer home until his apartment is ready where he will live out his days. His last public appearance was made on Feb. 28, 2013. The process of choosing a new Pope has begun and we will watch for the smoke over the Vatican to embrace the new pontiff.

The Sequester, hit America and automatic spending cuts will take place. Evidently it wasn’t that big a worry to the legislatures since they all went home for the weekend to reconvene on March 4, 2013. How will this affect our history? I believe we are just not sure since no one will tell us what the plan is. I have heard that airplanes will fall out of the sky because of the air traffic controllers losing their jobs and that head start will close its doors, people will lose their medical care, and prisoners will be released from prison. Is this a political article, no it is not, we are just trying to keep up with and understand the new history of our country. It is a bit confusing to say the least. Let’s go back to a time when we understood what was happening.

One of my favorite things was the beginning of the Palmyra Manufacturing Co. Inc. on March 5, 1827. Imagine, floating the parts for this company down the canal, with no cranes, using square nails, simple tools, and building a company that would employ a number of folks and grind wheat into flour taken from the farmers locally and shipping it out to other places. Imagine the Erie Canal has been officially open for 2 years and millions in tolls have been collected to pay back and support this amazing man made wonder.

Ohio became the 17th state in 1803 and by this time Palmyra had been established for over 14 years. Palmyra had been through three names until officially called Palmyra in 1796. A Main Street and a number of other streets had been established and dedicated. Churches were established and meetings were happening in homes until buildings could be built. The First Baptist Church on Walworth Road by old school No. 6 was established in 1800. Today it is located on the Main Street of Macedon. Check out the old cemetery behind the small home just near the Quaker Road and Walworth intersection. You have to go behind the house to see the cemetery but the Great-Great Grandparents of Sir Winston Churchill are buried there. This history is a little old and a little new, a little hard to believe, and a little unbelievable.

Call the museums at 597-6981 or visit 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
