100 Years Ago
January 30, 1913

• The T.A. Gillespie Co., contractors for the canal enlargement, were working day and night with a force of 500 men.

• There was a Roast Pig Social at the East Palmyra M.E. Church; $100 was raised.

• Out in Minsteed, telephone communication with the outside world was restored after line repairs. In Ganargua Valley Frank Lape was installing a new refrigerator for his meat market.

• Playing at the Newark Opera House - "The Girls From Rector's" a four act comedy - Tickets 25 cents to $1.

• The roof of the new Post Office on South Main St. was almost complete, thanks to favorable weather.

February 2, 1938

• The Newark Fire Department annual banquet was held at the Grange Hall.

• A serious fire at the L.G. Mattison block on South Main St. damaged the hardware store, Varsity Candy Shop, and Triangle Shoe Store. A rebuilding of the block was planned. After the fire, residents were asked to refrain from calling the fire house to ask where the fire is.

• Ad - Closed for Remodeling - Soda Fountain to be Installed and Complete Meal Service to be Offered - The Onyx Tea Room.

• Harry Dator, owner of Dator horse and farm implement business at 319 West Union, died at age 72.

January 31, 1963

• A 10-inch snowfall and sub zero temperatures put a strain on area residents and businesses. The Columbia Bank Time/Temperature Clock read minus degrees.  

• John Graham, founder of Graham Florist on Madison Street in 1927, died at the age of 74. He was a native of Scotland.

• Newark Cub Scouts Pat Sheehe, Danny Celso, Thomas Celso, Tim Celso, and Jeffery Burgess were shown taking a tour of the Capitol Theater projection room.

• Newark Reds beat DeSales 52-48- Shown were team members Rick Kouwe, Dave Pitcher, Gray Grant, Bill Moon and Jim Ruffalo.

• Newark High School 3-T Club officers for 1963 were Bonnie Spade, Kathy Palmeri, Judy Crescibene, Barb Morris, and Linda Quagliata.

February 5, 1988

• The Newark JV basketball team was 15-0 as they crushed Waterloo 82-48. Nester Hernandez led Newark with 19 points.

• Newark's six finalists in the Elks Hoop Shoot were Tom Demer, Gary McMillin, Prentis Smith, Treeva Curtis, Emily Saracino, and Chantee Hill.

• The Byrne Dairy Store opened at the corner of West Union St., and Scott St.

• Guitars 'N Stuff on West Union Street became the Newark Music Center, offering lessons and instruments.
