100 Years Ago
February 6, 1913

• There was a fracas at a boarding house near Peake's Bridge. Canal workers were involved and there was one fatality.

• The Wayne County Board of Supervisors were investigating the need for a tuberculosis hospital estimated to cost $10,000 to build.

• J.M. Pitkin took delivery of a new Cadillac touring car.

• Mrs. George Schwab , 58, a woman of domestic taste, died of the grippe at her home in Fairville.

February 9, 1938

• After months of haggling, a decision was made to install lighting for the Colburn park softball field. Estimated cost was $2500.

• Jimmie Hart, a 15-year-old local boy, was Newark's "natural" basketball forward, leading the Newark Reds with 117 points so far.

• Coming Soon in the Gazette- A serial entitled "Kidnap Murder Case". A Philo Vance story.

• Ad - Pancake Flour - 16 cents for a two pound sack, Corned Beef - 2 cans 33 cents, Oranges - 20 cents a dozen. Market Basket Supermarket, South Main Street, with headquarters and warehouse in Geneva.

February 6, 1963

• An early morning blaze destroyed the Valley Drive Inn restaurant on Route 31 west. The business had been purchased a new owner a week before. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

• Kurt F. Werts, a student at Grove City College, was elected historian of Nu Lambda Phi fraternity.  

• Ad - A & P Market offered Funk & Wagnall's Encylopedia, volume 1 for 25 cents and the remaining volumes at $2.99 per week.

• At Newark High School, officers of the Boy's Service Club were Gary Grant, Jim Praino, Mike Peters, and David Nash.

February 12, 1988

• A citizens group appeared before the Arcadia Town Board opposing the sale of the landfill on Route 88 to a large company, Browning & Ferris.

• The Newark Fire Department held their annual banquet at the Newark Elks Club. An honored guest was T. Spencer Knight, last surviving member of the Protectives Company #3.

• The Newark Post Office announced reduction of service hours, closing the window from 1 to 2:30 p.m. daily.

• Joe Cordaro was appointed part time Arcadia Code Enforcement officer .

• William Dean of Palmyra, a longtime employee of the New York Telephone Co. was named the company's  Community Representative.
