An estimated 30 to 40 handguns, plus one rifle, were stolen from a Palmyra gun shop overnight Monday night.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the burglary along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, someone entered D&M Shooting Sports at 4325 Route 31, Palmyra sometime during the night of Monday, Jan. 21 or morning of Tuesday, Jan. 22.

None of the guns taken are assault weapons as defined by the recently passed NY Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act. (Few handguns are classified as assault weapons, according to a SAFE Act FAQ page on the governor's office's website.)

Anyone with information about the burglary or the whereabouts of the weapons is encouraged to call the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at (315) 946-5747 or the Rochester office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms at (588) 987-2100.
