Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troops No. 122 and 138 along with Girl Scouts held their annual Scouting For Food event on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Residents of the village of Newark, again, generously donated nearly 2,000 pounds of food for the Newark Food Closet. The Troops, along with parents, collected, delivered, and sorted the canned and boxed varieties of food.

Since January 2012, the Food Closet has distributed food over 800 times to nearly 420 families in the Village of Newark and Town of Arcadia. Individuals and families may receive food up to 6 times in a year.

The Newark Food Closet is open Monday through Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the basement of the Municipal Building, 100 E. Miller St., Newark. Persons in need of food must apply at the Red Cross office at 331-3783 or 400 S. Main St. on the day food is requested. After presenting a photo ID and proof of current residence and mailing address, they will receive a Referral Form to be handed in at the Food Closet.  Each family will receive 3 to 4 days of food as supplies last.

The Food Closet depends entirely on donations of food and money from individuals, businesses, organizations, churches, and schools.  Financial donations are used to purchase perishable items.

To learn more about the Newark Food Closet, to volunteer, or to donate food or money, call 331-6705 or 573-0149.
