A large donation by a local doctor helped the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital exceed their campaign goal to bring a state-of-the-art emergency department to the hospital.

This spring, Wayne County will celebrate the grand opening of the hsopital’s new emergency department, soon to be named the Daniel Alexander, M.D., Emergency Department, paying tribute to one of the community’s most respected and accomplished physicians, Dr. Daniel Alexander.

As the only hospital in Wayne County, the new emergency department addresses one of the most significant needs in the community. To support this critical project, Alexander has committed to making the largest gift in the history of the hospital through the Dr. Daniel Alexander Family Foundation — a donation in excess of a half million dollars.

Alexander, an orthopaedic surgeon, is founder and owner of Finger Lakes Bone and Joint Center with offices in Newark and Geneva. Plans are also underway to open an office this summer in Canandaigua. Alexander opened his office in 2006 and his practice has grown tremendously ever since. He attributes much of that growth to the collaboration between his practice and the Newark hospital where most of his surgeries are performed.

“This area has done so much for me and for my family,” said Alexander, who lives in Canandaigua with his wife, Gail, and four children. “I am proud to know this gift will help Newark-Wayne Community Hospital be there for people during their time of greatest need.”

The new ED is the centerpiece of NWCH’s major modernization project and fundraising campaign. The current ED was designed to accommodate 11,000 patient visits per year. Last year, that same facility encountered more than 23,000 patient visits.

“The emergency department is very necessary and plays a vital role,” Alexander said. “I wanted to give back to the system that has allowed me to succeed in this region.”

The fact that the department will now bear his name is an unexpected honor, he said.

“That’s not the reason I gave,” he said. “I just wanted to help the hospital.”

The donation will funnel through the Dr. Daniel Alexander Family Foundation, which was set up to benefit less fortunate inner-city youth or provide medical services for the underserved. Alexander said he grew up in a very poor neighborhood in the inner city of Buffalo and the local Boys Club became an important part of his life. His  journey to become a renowned surgeon and philanthropist is one steeped in hard work, family values and a commitment to serve others.

Attending medical school at SUNY Buffalo while working full time as a lieutenant for the Buffalo Fire Department, Alexander understood the impact one can have as a community servant. After receiving his orthopaedic training at Henry Ford hospital in Detroit, Mich., he returned to the area in 2004. In 2006, he opened the Finger Lakes Bone and Joint Center. As his practice grew, performing 1,400 procedures last year — making him one of the busiest orthopaedic surgeons in the United States — he maintained a focus on family and philanthropy, giving back to the Boys and Girls Club in Geneva and funding the building of a new community center in the neighborhood where he grew up.

Living in Canandaigua with his wife, Gail, and their four children, Alexander considers himself quite fortunate to not only be able to give back to the communities that helped him reach his goals, but to also love what he does everyday.

“I love my job and I love my patients,” he said. “I help people to walk again. What could be better than that?”
