For its October meeting, the Western Wayne Art Group welcomed James Zeger, a local artist and teacher.

Zeger graduated from Sodus in 2003 and went on to study illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Fine Art majoring in Illustration. Zeger also received his Masters degree in Art Education in 2011 from SUNY Oswego. He has been part of a local historical preservation program called Mural Mania since it began in 2007. Zeger has painted several murals throughout Lyons and Sodus Point, the most recently for the town of Williamson. He is currently working on a mural for the town of Sodus.

James demonstrated his acrylic painting technique working from a photo of Mt. Marcy, which he photographed in February 2011 while hiking. He painted on a gessoed illustration board, which handles his technique well. Zeger uses Golden Acrylics and his palette colors were cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, yellow ochre, and white. Acrylic paints dry fast, so he also adds Golden glazing liquid to the paint to slow the drying time and soften the edges.

Using cerulean blue and white, Zeger started the sky area with a No. 1 flat brush to block in the areas. He then switched to a smaller brush to paint the mountain with an Ultramarine blue wash. He painted the tree line using ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson. Adding a touch of burnt umber to that mixture and painting over the mountain area helped push the mountain back. The painting came alive when Zeger painted the clouds using a dry brushing technique.
