Following discussions about the volume of trash at the Newark municipal building, the Newark Village Board has awarded a contract for trash removal.

At its Aug. 17 meeting, the Newark Village Board awarded a three-year contract to K & D Disposal for trash removal at the municipal building, the Newark operations center, Newark Cemetery, the wastewater treatment plant and Colburn Park at an annual cost of $4,380. The contract is subject to the village being able to get trash removal twice a week at the municipal building — rather than once, as the contract states — at a cost to be billed to Trustee Chris Avery.

Currently, trash is being removed there three times a week because of the volume, said Mayor Peter Blandino. The pick-up at the municipal building includes waste from that building, as well as from the complex at 165 E. Union St., owned by Avery.

Under the current agreement, the village is responsible for paying for 1/3 of the cost of removal at that location; Avery pays the other 2/3.

Avery said the volume of trash has decreased at his building, but trash removal will be required twice per week at the dumpster shared with the municipal building.

Village Attorney Art Williams said he will contract K & D about getting two pick-ups per week at the municipal building.

In other business, the board:
•AUTHORIZED — an agreement with New York State Electric & Gas for the CA$HBACK Plus program for the wastewater treatment plant. The plant will be on stand-by mode, in which, at peak times, it may be asked to go off the grid and use its generators. If this occurs, the village will be reimbursed for the cost of diesel fuel at the current spot market rate, which, at peak times, is usually double the normal cost, said Village Treasurer Stephen Murawski.

•HEARD — from John Peters, of 110 Elmwood Ave., that during recent storms, his lawn and basement have been flooding. The storm sewers are not taking the water when there are torrential downpours, and the water is flooding over the street onto the curbs, he said.
Operations Manager Jim Bridgeman said he would look into the problem.

•AUTHORIZED — the attendance of Investigators Gary VerStraete and Jay Warren at a workshop on photo line-ups and witnesses on Sept. 8, at no cost; attendance of VerStraete at fire investigators school from Sept. 20 to Oct. 1, at a cost less than $600; and attendance of contingency Sergeant Michael Patton at supervisor’s school from Sept. 6 to 24, at a cost of $762.

•ACCEPTED — Renee Drock and Angela Drock as members of Arcadia Hose Co. No. 2 of the Newark Volunteer Fire Department, and Mike Zematis as a member of Excelsior Hook & Ladder No. 4. The board also accepted the resignation of Brad Vandermortal from the fire department.

•ANNOUNCED — that a household hazardous waste collection will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Wayne County Highway Department at 7227 Route 31 in Lyons. For more information or to make an appointment, call (800) 724-3867.
