Because of health concerns about exposure to blue-green algal toxins in surface water, Sodus Point’s lakeside and bayside beaches, were voluntarily closed Wednesday, Aug. 25 by Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth, the administrators of the swim and recreation programs.

The bayside beach was closed for precautionary measures due to a noted blue-green algae bloom in the area of the beach and will not reopen until the algae bloom has sufficiently dissipated and follow up testing by the New York State Department of Health reveals that microcystin toxin levels are within acceptable standards.

The lakeside beach is closed for precautionary measures due to poor water visibility because of a surface sheen. Closure for poor water visibility is standard practice at beaches and swimming pools for safety reasons.

Public health officials and the Department of Aging and Youth are working closely with the state to monitor the situation and to keep the beaches at Sodus Point safe for recreational swimmers.
