Stamps, as we know them today, have been around since the first paper stamp with an adhesive back was created in the United Kingdom in 1840. Before that, stamps were printed on a piece of mail via a hand-stamp made out of wood or cork after being pressed into ink. The stamps on display at the Lyons Public Library are part of the private collection of Lori DiSanto and Michael Newberg. As can be seen from the stamps on display, they are as varies and colorful as the many countries that produce them.

A new stamp club is forming in Lyons called the Lyons Youth Stamp Club. This club is for kids in grades third through eighth and you don’t even have to live in Lyons to join. This Club is mostly for beginners just starting out in the great hobby of Postage Stamp Collecting. There will be a meeting the first Saturday of each month from October to June from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Parents, as always, you’re welcome to stay and help during club times if you would like to, but be careful last year at the other Club Meetings some parents got hooked and are now collecting stamps as well. Members will be meeting at the Lyons Public Library in the Local History Room.

The best part is there is absolutely no cost at all to join the Lyons Youth Stamp Club thanks to the kind folks at the Finger Lakes Stamp Club based in Geneva. So if this sounds like fun to you, just call 946-4870 for more information or to sign up for the club. You can also go to the Lyons Public Library to sign up. There is a limit to how many we can have in the Club so sign up early so you don’t miss out. For more information on the club or to sign up at the Library, call 946-9262 or email lyonslibrary@owwl.org.
