The Paul T. Freund company will be shutting down its operation after current contracts are completed, and the employees will be out of a job, according to reliable sources.
The company started in 1891 as a small, Rochester-based rigid box manufacturer devoted to quality packaging products and services.
The company has a FOR LEASE sign on its building located at 2077 Division St., in Palmyra, which, sources said, stopped operations in November, 2011.
At the corporate office, located at 216 Park St., in Palmyra, no one was sitting at the receptionist desk, and several offices were vacant.
According to the Paul T. Freund company’s website, the business had grown over the years to incorporate technology and innovation of some 10 different specialty packagers from all over the country.
In 1999, the company introduced the folding carton.
Paul T. Freund was one of the top five box manufacturers in the nation.
The manufacturing at the Canal St. facility spanned over 150,000 square feet. Freund employed about 100 people in design, manufacturing, and support positions.
The company offered diverse production capabilities from total hand fabrication for small quantities to high-speed automated machinery for larger quantities. The company also could make unusual and unique packaging, such as rounds, ovals, windowed, and six-sided packaging.
An effort to sell the company fell through, the sources said.
In an attempt to speak with someone about the company’s closing, the Post was informed to contact Peter Freund. However, a voice mail left on his cell phone was not answered.
