During the Victorian era and into the early 20th century, decorative containers were made for many food items that went on the table.

Why stare at an ugly, uninspiring container when a beautiful piece of china could hide the original and make it pleasing to the eye? And thus the ordinary became the extraordinary. The Lyons Public Library has on display a collection condensed milk containers made of china, from the private collection of Pat Lyon Jones. A set usually includes a small plate that the china container sits on and the matching cover for the top.

All of the pieces would have the same pattern which could match an existing pattern of dishes or at least appear to. A hole in the bottom allows you to remove the can easily by pushing it up. All of the containers but one are made of china — a metal one with a handle, is engraved with flowers as is the top and comes with its own separate glass jar that can be filled. Some may have been used as jam jars containers as well. This display will be up until the end of March.

The Library is located at 122 Broad St. with parking accessible from Phelps Street near the Town Hall. Call the Lyons Public Library at 946-9262 or email lyonslibrary@owwl.org.
