Newark Elks and five other West Central New York District lodges — Canandaigua, Lyons, Rochester, Wolcott and Webster-Fairport — recently visited Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center to help distribute over $10,230 worth of needed items to the residents.
Newark contributed over 215 gifts valued at $3,095, which included lap robes, afghans, toiletries, hats, scarves and snacks.
The district lodges sent 32 members to visit various units at the VA to hand out gifts and listen as residents told their stories and shared memories.
Newark members included exalted ruler Susan House and Air Force veterans John Lawrence and Robert Schinsing. They met with Michael Jankoski, who served in Afghanistan with the U.S. Marines from 1986 to 1993 and the U.S. Navy from 1993 to 2006; and Michael Thomas, who joined the Marines when he was 17 and served for 18 years in the Far East as gunnery sergeant.
