Lyons Public Library, 122 Broad St., will celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 4.
The event will feature a Dr. Seuss Hat Hunt, minute-to-win-it games, Dewey Decimal Find, cake and punch. Patrons can bring unexpired canned or boxed food items to pay for fines; one food item equals $1 in fines. This does not count toward lost or damaged items.
The library’s new program, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, will start on that day. The program encourages reading for ages 4 and younger and the impact it has on them as readers and learners when they start school.
The day was launched in 2011 as a grassroots literacy project in Connecticut. Almost 900 libraries participated in the event’s fifth anniversary.
