1 SECURITY VS. PRIVACY Closing out the 2016-17 series for the George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum, Stewart Baker — the first assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush — will explore recent efforts and the tension between cybersecurity and personal privacy. 3 LGBT WEEKEND ON THE SLOPES Ski Out NY — a meetup and ski weekend for LGBT ski and snowboard enthusiasts, their friends and their allies — is set for this Friday through Sunday, Jan. 27-29. 4 IN CONCERT Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony — a subversive work on the Soviet-era composer's part — takes center stage for this weekend's performances by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Saturday in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester. Also on the program are Elliot Goldenthal's Waltz and Agitato, "Pravda" — a world concert premiere — and Ravel's "Shéhérazade," featuring the voice of soprano Nicole Cabell, an Eastman School of Music alumna. winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. 5 A MATTER OF MEMORY It's the final weekend for the “A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age” exhibit, which concludes Sunday at the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Ave., Rochester. The exhibit displays the transformation from film to digital photographs and how this has broadened access to photographic images. The artists also explore the effects of the move to the digital age, in particular the relative scarcity of physical photographic images and how it affects society's relationship to memory, according to the museum website.
