Wayne County libraries, including Clyde-Savannah Public Library, Lyons Public Library, Newark Public Library, Palmyra Public Library, Sodus Community Library and Walworth-Seely Public Library, are launching the early literacy initiative 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.
The program encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Families can register at their local library, where stickers and prizes will be awarded as reading milestones are reached.
Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help strengthen language skills and vocabulary — two important tools when children start learning to read in kindergarten. The American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents to read aloud to children daily.
The challenge’s goal is to help guide parents and children along the path toward developing and sustaining a healthy daily dose of reading age-appropriate literature.
