Newark Public Library, 121 High St., will host “Voices and Views: 20th Century American Essays” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 1, March 22, April 5, April 19 and May 3.
The group will discuss different essays organized around a theme. Joe O’Toole will moderate the discussion and help analyze each essay.
Themes will center on an issue-based approach, examining how the American experience affects different segments of the population and how different individuals might view topics differently. Some essays use concrete details to explore larger themes that reveal experiences common to many Americans. Topics will include race, family and rural and urban landscapes that shape different perspectives that make up the American experience.
Registration is required. All essays are found in “The Best American Essays of the Century,” edited by Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Atwan. The book will be provided.
