The New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute will soon start its annual Honorary Membership drive by mail in Wayne County.
The Sheriffs’ Institute provides centralized training programs and services for sheriff’s offices where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis, including the Sheriff’s’ Summer Camp on Keuka Lake in Yates County. The camp hosted 25 Wayne County children in the summer of 2016 whose trips were covered by the Sheriff’s Institute. The program teaches an understanding of and respect for laws and those who enforce them. The beneficial camper to counselor ratio allows for individual attention with an emphasis on the development of self esteem.
Financial support for many of the Sheriffs’ Institute programs comes from honorary membership dues. Invitations are extended on a nonpartisan basis, and the invitees are selected at random. Anyone interested in supporting the efforts of the Sheriff’s Institute by becoming an honorary member should contact Sheriff Barry Virts if they do not receive an invitation in the mail or download an application from the Sheriff’s Institute website. All donations are tax deductible.
